FAQ

Questions we hear.
Answers we stand by.

A few of the questions marina operators ask us most often, and the plain-language answers we give back.

The straight answers

No fine print. No hedging.

These come up early and often. Here is exactly how HarborKey handles each one, the same way we would tell you standing on your dock.

01

What happens during a power outage?

Every HarborKey controller has battery backup at the door. Gates and entries keep working through outages, and audit logs reconcile automatically once power returns.

02

What if a tenant's phone dies at the gate?

Phone, fob, and PIN all work. Every credential is multi-modal. Staff can also remotely unlock any door from the admin app while a tenant sorts out their phone.

03

Do you need cell coverage at the dock to open a door?

No. The local controller handles authentication on-site. Connectivity is only needed to sync the audit log to the cloud, and that catches up automatically whenever the network returns.

04

How long does installation take?

A typical 20-door marina is surveyed in one visit, designed within a week, and live within roughly 30 days. We phase the work so your existing gates keep operating throughout the transition.

05

What happens when a tenant moves out?

Revoke their access in one click. No rekeying, no chasing fobs, no replacing cards. The audit log keeps the full history of who had access and when.

06

Does HarborKey work with my existing gate hardware?

Usually yes. We retrofit existing strikes, maglocks, and gate operators wherever they are still in good shape. If something is past its life, we will quote a replacement up front, no surprises.

07

Can I limit access by time of day?

Yes, per door, per credential. Contractors only during business hours, liveaboards 24/7, day guests with a window. Set the rule once and apply it to anyone.

08

What about guest or contractor access?

Temporary credentials with built-in expiration. Issue a code that works for one afternoon, or a fob that expires in 30 days. No follow-up cleanup needed, the system handles the cleanup itself.

09

Do you sell or share tenant data?

Never. Tenant data belongs to the marina. We do not sell it, we do not share it with third parties, and we do not use it for anything other than running your access system.

10

Is there a long-term contract?

No annual commitment. The hardware, configuration, and data are yours after install. If you ever want to part ways, you keep everything that is on your docks.

Got another question?

One stop. One number to call.

If your question is not here, it is because it is specific to your marina. Call us and a real person will answer, the same local team that has supported the Bay Area since 1999.
